A court has ordered a re-run of the election in Oldham East and Saddleworth after ruling Phil Woolas knowingly made false statements about his Liberal Democrat rival.

The former immigration minister’s General Election win, by 103 votes, has been declared void after two judges said he used an illegal practice during the campaign.

Speaking outside the court, Mr Woolas said he would apply for judicial review and, in a statement through his solicitor, argued the court used a standard for conduct set nearly 100 years ago.

It is understood he is now no longer the constituency’s MP as a result of the ruling but his decision to appeal meant it was not immediately clear whether a by-election will be called. Sky News
